Belgian police recently conducted a search at the Huawei headquarters in Brussels. Authorities also raided 20 additional locations across the Belgian provinces of Flanders and Wallonia, as well as in Portugal, leading to multiple arrests, according to prosecutors.
A spokesperson from the Belgian Prosecutor’s Office indicated that there is an ongoing investigation into preliminary charges of active corruption, forgery of documents, and money laundering related to the European Parliament. The alleged bribery is believed to have benefited the tech company Huawei.
調查背景
The investigation focuses on lobbyists for the Chinese tech giant who are accused of bribing members of the European Parliament to influence EU decision-making in favor of Huawei. During the operation, a judge has ordered the sealing of the European Parliament offices belonging to two assistants implicated in the case.
Details of the probe were revealed by the investigative website Follow the Money, along with two Belgian newspapers, Le Soir and Knack. Reports have identified one of the main suspects as 41-year-old Valerio Ottati, Huawei’s Director of EU Public Affairs, who previously served as an assistant to two Italian Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) involved in a group focused on China policy.
主要嫌疑人
An anonymous source informed Follow The Money that Ottati reportedly lacks expertise in technology and was appointed by Huawei primarily due to his connections. This raises questions about the qualifications of individuals involved in influencing EU policies.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation. Spokesperson Thomas Regnier highlighted the security concerns surrounding Huawei and its implications for Europe’s 5G telecom networks.
安全擔憂
Regnier stated, “Huawei represents materially higher risks than other 5G suppliers,” urging EU member states to consider decisions that would restrict or exclude Huawei from their 5G networks. This reflects a broader apprehension regarding the potential risks associated with using Huawei’s technology in critical infrastructure.
The situation remains fluid as investigations continue, and the implications for Huawei and its operations in Europe could be significant, especially in light of rising scrutiny over the company’s practices and affiliations.
